January 2008

elcome to Bexton Pre-school Nursery (hereafter referred to as the Nursery), our aim is to provide a friendly, happy, secure and stimulating environment, where your child can build on their social and communication skills to increase confidence, independence and extend their concentration. We believe in learning though play and that all children learn best through hands on experience in a supportive and positive environment.

FACILITIES: The Nursery has two rooms, each with their own toilets.  We also have a disabled toilet in the hall with changing facilities. The large outdoor area consists of different sections, a playground with painted murals that can be used for games and bikes, a climbing frame on a specialized soft surface, an artificial grass area for use throughout the year and a quiet garden area with planting. We also have a purpose built garden area adjacent to the pre-school room with planting area, play house and water play areas.

CURRICULUM:  We will follow the guidelines from the ‘Birth to Three Matters’ in planning activities for the children 3 years plus until September 2008 (Pre-school Room Children ONLY) when the Early Years Foundation Stage standards will come into place .

For children in the Nursery Room we commenced the Early Years Foundation Stage standards September 2007.

For 3 and 4 year olds we follow the ‘Foundation Stage Curriculum’. Which focus’s on the six areas of learning, as follows:

  • Communication, Language and Literacy
  • Mathematical Development
  • Knowledge and Understanding of the World

  • Creative Development
  • Physical Development
  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development

Children’s progress will be unobtrusively assessed during their time at the Nursery. This information is available for parents to see at any time and will be passed on to the school when the child starts in reception.

ADMISSIONS:The nursery is non-discriminatory and caters for children aged two to five years. Children are grouped according to their age and the academic year during which they move into school.  Children who turn three between 1st September and 31st August enter the Nursery Room.  Children who turn four between the above dates enter the Pre-school Room.

Thus offering children the opportunity to spend one year in the nursery room before entering the pre-school room for a further year.  The nursery room operates using two different curriculums as stated; therefore, we endeavour to group together children aged 2-3 years old for separate sessions to those over 3 years.

REGISTRATION: Parents are welcome to place their child on our waiting list, a registration fee of £25.00 applies for any child not in receipt of the Nursery Education Grant Funding. Parents are welcome to make an appointment to view the Nursery. Once a child's sessions are secured parents will be issued with a registration pack for completion.

The term before your child's due start date the Room Manager will arrange a suitable time to make a home visit when the settling-in procedure for your child will be discussed.  Later you will be invited with your child for accompanied visit into the setting.

MANAGEMENT AND COMMITTEE:The Nursery is a non-profit making, charitable organisation with an elected Management Committee. The Committee employs a Business Manager who is responsible for the day to day running of the Nursery.  A separate committee of parents organise social and fund-raising events throughout the year. Parents who are interested in joining either Committee are always welcome; you will find a list of committee members to contact and a staff list in your registration pack.

CLOTHING: Anyone wishing to purchase the Bexton Pre-school sweatshirt and polo-shirt @ £8.00/£6.00 are most welcome.

The uniform is optional and entirely by parental choice.

Children should be dressed in ‘play clothes’ that they can move in easily and you don’t mind them getting dirty. Please ensure that clothing is named and enables the children to be independent in using the toilet. During hot weather children need sunhats and sun cream for protection.

It is also advisable for the children in the Nursery Room to bring a named bag with a change of clothes in case of accidents or spillages. Sensible shoes are vital for physical play preferably with velcro or buckle fastenings as laces can cause accidents.

TOYS: Please do not allow your child to bring their own toys into Nursery. They can get lost causing great distress for the child. The exception is a soft toy or comforter that may provide security for a child when they first start.

POLICIES: Once a child’s place is secured the parent will receive a registration pack including general information about the setting and its policies.
